Mine Safety and Health
The Michigan Mine Safety & Health Training Program is located within the Geology and Mining Engineering and Sciences Department of the College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations lists safety and health regulations for mines located in the US and enforced by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The Program receives a grant from MSHA to provide training and compliance assistance at Michigan mines. Training materials prepared for use in Michigan are shared with trainers throughout the world by publishing them on Program's internet site (mine-safety.mtu.edu).
The Program has two Michigan instructors. One is located in Houghton and one in Bay City. A third Training Contractor is located in Charlevoix. Training and compliance assistance materials are prepared by the Program Director with the assistance of instructors and the Program's office assistant.
The Program publishes a newsletter to inform the State's mines of the availability of these services. A training schedule is published in the fall for the following year and mines which use scheduled days for the particular area of the State save money by not having to pay for instructor travel.
Training is scheduled by calling or emailing the Program Coordinator (906/487-2453, dcarlson@mtu.edu), who also contacts companies trained by the Program during the previous year. The Program provides the instructor, training equipment and materials. The companies trained must provide a suitable training location and any refreshments or meals.
The Program has an Advisory Board consisting of people associated with Michigan's mining industry, who understand what is needed to accomplish the Program goals.
Michigan Technological University's Mine Safety and Health Training Program, along with it's advisers and MSHA are working together to make mining in the State of Michigan a productive and safe enterprise.
